While never reaching the ubiquity of Oasis's Wonderwall, there was a time and place where this would be in the repertoire of every young person who brought an acoustic guitar to a house party or camping trip.
I am getting this done ! I am completing the task! What I Read
The Other Bennet Sister – Janice Hadlow – What an excellent book! Really well constructed story and deeply enjoyable arc. I think the romance was nicely done, but the center of the book was reflection – Mary the least loved Bennet sister gets to really take her time and observe the people in her life and know them deeply. It felt slightly self-indulgent (Mary is indeed going to the garden to eat worms) and yet I am here as the self and I am being indulged.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride Vols 1, 2, 3 – Kore Yamazaki – A fun read! Interesting world building and a slow burn romance between Chise and Elias Ainswroth, a horse/deer-skulled maybe human magus who bought her (not from One Direction!) in order to save her life and also marry her, maybe, at some point? It’s also deeply indulgent to the exact kind of big symbolic magic that I love, and gives a lot of time to the slow unfolding of their connection and what Chise’s magical powers will do. The story with the cats has been my favorite so far, but the Succubus in love with the random farmer who can’t see her at all is also a sweet tragedy. Really enjoying it.
I will say, I feel some conflict about one of the villains (so far) being revealed as the folkloric character of The Wandering Jew. Particularly because he’s a villain, and secondarily because I have no concept of how this character is understood by the author or by a Japanese audience, who are largely not dealing with the kind of hegemonic pressures to be Christian that shaped the folklore around that character. I weirdly adored the way that character trope was used in A Canticle for Leibowitz, because he was so very much Just Some Guy, and in particular, still identifiably, cantankerously Jewish in the face of being immortal, in a world where we only otherwise see Christians. So. I'm putting in a pin in that character for now.
AMB is interesting to read in context of My Happy Marriage, which also features a young woman with hidden magical powers escaping an uncaring/abusive family to a Perfectly Arranged Marriage. In the context of what Spouse is reading, this led to a discussion about the nature of isekai (a favorite Spousal genre) and the idea of different kinds of escape. Romance the genre often has an element of escapism baked in, and it’s sort of odd to think that some people in these novels are getting a Person to whisk them away to another magical world where they are treasured and important as a bride, and other people are getting hit by a bus.
What I’m Reading The Everlasting by Alix E Harrow – A romantic and Romantic story. I love Sir Una Everlasting and I love Owen Mallory and the loving depiction of his flaws and how he becomes a useful idiot to a certain kind of patriotism that he also clearly sees thru and yet and yet and yet.
Platform Decay – Martha Wells – New Murderbot! No spoilers! I’m having a good and also bad time!

Name: Risa Age: 37 Location: Northeastern USA About Me: Hobbyist writer, mostly fanfiction. Participant in writing communities. Active on Dreamwidth, tumblr, and AO3. About My Journal: It's a journal (18+ only!) I post about this and that. What I Write: Fanfiction, poetry, some original stuff. Genres include Smut, Omegaverse, Mpreg, Yaoi, Romance, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, etc. I lean toward M/M(/M) romances most of all, but I have a friendly attitude toward female characters and F/M F/F ships, sometimes dabble. What I Don't Write: I tend to avoid writing stories centered around characters younger than 25-ish now, because I'm not that young anymore, and I don't feel that young either, so it doesn't feel right at the moment, if that makes sense? What I Read: Same as what I write, plus a smattering of books, both fiction and non-fiction. The field of psychology was most relevant to my interests back in college. What I Don't Read: JK Rowling, anything I know is AI-generated, or any (auto)biographical/non-fiction work affiliated with right-wing thinktanks in my country still alive today. Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: You can always ask, but my time is limited. I can probably only help edit/revise short works (fewer than 10K words, I would say.)
I mostly post about: Writing, exercising, shows I'm watching, or any old thing that's on my mind.
My hobbies are: Fanfiction (reading and writing), sports (watching), anime/manga, older video games, long walks, playing with animals. I dabble in a lot of little things, but mostly, I'm a writer.
My fandoms are: WWE (specifically the little corner of tumblr that still likes The Shield. I'll never let Roman live Rolleigns or Ambreigns down) Final Fantasy IX, Persona 5, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Survivor, and many others.
I'm looking to meet people who: I want a variety of people to talk to, but I'm not looking for anyone to sell me new interests or criticize my current ones. I have my own reasons for what interests me, and it doesn't matter if those reasons are superficial. I want people with a "Live and Let Live" mentality when it comes to fandom, but also, who feels comfortable leaving the occasional comment.
My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic, but daily posting is my goal.
When I add people, my dealbreakers are: MAGA, performative activism, disagreeable/argumentative people who can't help themselves, plus anyone who makes or agrees with statements calling for the general mass harm of US American citizens (or anyone around the world, yes, but listen.) Personally, I fucking hate MAGA, never voted for the clown king regardless of what anyone else did, but I am so sick of random self-righteous assholes saying cruel shit about my country's working people. Any of my country's working people, including ones scammed into morally reprehensible work. We should be changing their minds, not calling for their harm. Yes, that work is never done and we're all tired, but consider this: there are billionaires and politicians causing real harm in real time while some people are seriously still out here policing fandoms and cancelling low hanging fruit like they're accomplishing anything. That's a fucking joke if you ask me. And you know what? You do you, but please, skip friending me if this is you.
Before adding me, you should know: I am a passionate, friendly person. I want to talk to people in a light and fun way, hang out, do fandom as chill as I can. This is stress relief from work. I don't want to treat it like an obligation or something I have to think too hard about. Naturally, there's nothing I wouldn't ask of people that I'm not willing to give in return. :)
Fandom: Batman - All Media Types, Marvel Cinematic Universe Pairings/Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes/Jason Todd Rating: Explicit Length: 77,145 words Creator Links:there_must_be_a_lock Theme: journey & travel, crossovers/fusions, crossover pairings, slow burn, angst with a happy ending
Summary: Bucky’s been running for a week when the supposedly-untraceable burner phone he stole from a Hydra warehouse starts ringing. He’s in a gas station bathroom off a remote highway close to the Croatian border, getting ready to bleach his hair; the ringtone bounces shrilly off the bare tiles and makes his jaw clench tight.
[Or: the one where Bucky is hired to train Jason, and he ends up learning a thing or two himself.]
Reccer's Notes: One of the best DC/MCU crossover fics I've ever read. I love how the fic explores Jason's and Bucky's perspectives on love, sex, romance, intimacy, trauma, and relationships <3
Content Notes: discussion of past suicidal thoughts, discussion of past underage sex work, allusions to past torture and present canon-typical violence
Fandom: Doctor Who Pairings/Characters: Twelve/Missy (but also Doctor/Master generally) Rating: Not Rated Length: 121,404 words Creator Links: yonderdarling Theme: Journey & Travel, getting back together
Summary: "He's sitting in a cafe in Vichy France (he was aiming for 2042) and waiting for his lunch when Missy plops down in the chair opposite him." This is an idea they've had before, it's just the first time they've both been able to consider it. The Doctor and Missy try travelling together.
Reccer's Notes: After Twelve loses Clara, Twelve and Missy try travelling together through space and time. Reading Missy and Twelve together in the TARDIS is a delight. However, the fic digs into the complicated nature of their relationship, gives them a rather tragic backstory, and focuses how they deal with things as they start falling into a romantic relationship and the consequences of that.
Izzy Hands (right): a man who needs a multi-party introduction to hugging.
I talked about the Feral Five (Archie/Fang/Frenchie/Izzy/Jim) in the previous post about favourite poly ships, but for this manifesto I'd like to expand that further to All Deck on Hands—the inarguably perfect ship name for Izzy Hands and the entire crew of the Revenge.
(And how much do I love being in a fandom where a polycule straying into the double digits has a name and a fanbase?) Exact numbers on this polycule vary based on who's aboard the Revenge when the story's set, but for me, I'm most often adding Lucius Spriggs, Black Pete, Roach, Wee John Feeney, and Oluwande Boodhari to the previous fivesome in a post-canon setting.
There were a lot of Leonard Cohen songs in the running, but his 1988 I'm Your Man album fit tidily into the lineup, and this is one of the tracks on it that I'm always in the mood to listen to. (That said, I might also be sneaking in a cover of a Cohen song later on in the series.)
Summary: When a phone call informing him of his father’s death sends him on an unexpected and unwanted trip back to his childhood home, Murdoc finds himself confronted with more questions about his origins than he ever could have anticipated. Who knew a couple of shoe boxes, left to gather dust in his father’s closet, could contain such heart-wrenching secrets. And why is 2D so invested? Post-canon. 2Doc.
Reccer's Notes: I have just recently started peeking into this fandom, and did not realize that this is one of the Big Fics for the pairing until after I finished it, but it's so earned! The story pulled me along the whole way: imagine a world-wide road trip where every party is kind of miserable, and there are occult curses and ghosts chasing them the whole time! Great world-building and mystery elements too, and pique character work and dramatic tension! There is a lot of fanart embedded throughout, as well, which is such a treat!
Content Notes: violence & injury, drug abuse, addiction, and grief, and past child abuse, CSA and adult SA
Summary: Some people lose their heads. Vox loses his body. It’s a sex thing.
Or: while Vox is busy making sure Valentino Day goes smoothly, his meatsuit departs on an epic journey across the Pentagram. Now it’s up to Valentino, Velvet and Vox’s head to find the damn thing before something bad happens to it.
Reccer's Notes: Can't usually find much travelling with Sinners in Hazbin, but it definitely counts when some Overlords have to go around on foot to find someone body.
For after reading First of all, Val being angry that he can't find Vox's body instead of concerned brings me great joy. As if Vox did it all on purpose.
I have to think about all the other reasons (other than Alastor) that Vox would have for letting his body do whatever it wants when his consciousness appears to remain with his body at all times. Does he get to choose where his mind stays? In which case, the body that "wines and dines" Val is only less important because Vox's consciousness isn't in it.
And we know Vox would love Val even as a worm. He would hate loving him as a worm, but he would.
Velvette shaming Val is so tasty. Shaming Vox? Yes, of course. But fixing Val with the disappointed look is so much funnier in this context.
I'm so freaking happy Charlie's first reaction was that Vox's body was a Dullahan. There is a version of this fic where Angel wasn't around to inform them it was Vox, leaving Charlie and Vaggie to go on an adventure to find a head and making it even harder for the Vees to find him.
The goat demon is a freaking boss. Risking talking back to the Vees, considering he actually knows that's who he is talking to. What a hero. Who else of his level could get Val to kiss them?
And I'm glad Maggot Mary seems to have what she wants in order. Her body really does seem like one of the worst punishments Hell could have provided someone. How often does she die and have to reconstitute? I want to know what her guard dogs are like.
So many people might construe calling someone's body "our things" as dehumanizing, but considering it's Velvette saying it Vox indeed has the money on the mark. It's her attempt at being flippant while she indeed cares about him. After all, why would Velvette have bothered putting this much time in otherwise? Even with putting out fires.
In the end, of course Charlie lets him keep the nightgown so he doesn't have to go home nude. And Velvette doesn't bother to give him another outfit to wear. Going for takeout and straight home is such a boon for Vox as well. You know if Velvette wasn't busy she would have wanted to spend some time threatening Vox with having him go into a restaurant like this.
I love to consider what S2 would have been like if this had happened first: because Alastor then wouldn't have Vox to fall upon to get him out of his deal with Rosie, Vox couldn't insult the hotel while convincing people to rise up against Heaven, and it would have been perhaps a somewhat more lighthearted comedy before Vox blew a hole in Heaven.
Summary: Though Jimmy Kent has found success and fortune since moving on from Downton, he has never been able to forgive Lady Anstruther for the troubles she's caused him in the past. Motivated by a burning desire for revenge, Jimmy takes action - and enlists the help of the one person he's ever trusted. Naturally that person is Thomas Barrow.
Reccer's Notes: This fic has romance, a revenge plot, and mystery fiction elements, all while the characters travel to China. It's a really fun read.
Fandom: “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” (Arrogant Worms song; Captain Tractor cover) Pairings/Characters: Gen; OCs of assorted genders. Rating: General Audiences Length: 4:13 Content Notes: The OP identifies the song as by the Arrogant Worms—who originated it, but the version used here is Captain Tractor’s cover. Creator Links: (YouTube): vinnyreid
Theme: Journey & Travel, Fanvid, Just Plain Fun, Kidfic (child performers), Old Fandoms, Pre-AO3 Works
Summary:This is a video that I made with some of the students from the youth group back in April 2003. Its pretty cheezy, but we had lots of fun making it and still get a laugh out of watching it. Hope you enjoy it too. The song is "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" by the Arrogant Worms.
Reccer's Notes: This is an exercise in how to make a killer fanvid on a backyard budget—propelled by the sheer exuberant glee of the kid pirates running amuck and by the masterfully edited nonstop action—Benny Hillesque chase scenes, sword fights, and Scooby Dooby Doors. (Note in particular the inventive use of camera angles and farm and playground architecture to create the impression that they actually have a ship.)
Things I Learned in the process of fact-checking this post: “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” has become such an anthem for Saskatchewanians (and Canadians in general) that it’s taught in grade-school music classes! (It’s also a compelling fantasy to lots of non-Canadian dwellers in regions marked by farming and economic disgruntlement; The Longest Johns (of viral “Wellerman” fame) have localized it accordingly.)
I would have added “a large local body of water”, but it turns out that part of the regional in-joke is that Regina (“Regina’s mighty shores”), the provincial capitol, is in a landlocked part of Saskatchewan; the Jolly Roger is a legendary dive bar there.
Reid doesn’t specify the affiliation of the youth group, but the censorship of the word “damn” leads me to suspect a church.
Was Sunday and I didn't have a sense of time pressure, so I went to church for the first time in a few weeks. I still feel more like it's a thing I do sometimes than a community, in great part due to the hour and ten minute travel time making it feel like I really don't want to get involved in other things throughout the week given my general exhaustion level when working. However, the female pastor mentioned a few small groups starting soon, one of which is for Grief, and it kind of tempts to at least try...
Afterward, I ate at a really good soup restaurant but still needed a little more food. Got some fries on the way home and a few other things from McDonald's, which is the closest food to my apartment. Went to sleep for hours after. I had a day of internet productivity yesterday and therefore didn't get a lot of sleep. I want to do more, but I also don't want to just be a lump. There's a lot of boom or bust about being physically active or active online that I wish I could balance when I am off work.
I need to make a plan for what food I am going to make next and go to the grocery store tomorrow afternoon, but I can't decide what to make. Maybe it's time for beef/veg soup again. I used to make it weekly. Recently, I've been making more Mexican-coded stuff.
I kind of would like to make a sort of Mexican-y chili but with whole beef instead of ground beef. Every time I find pure ground beef here, it is "from frozen" and because I stick it in the freezer until use it feels like the texture of gravel half the time. Dunno if that would work...??? I do have chili seasoning mix but I am unsure.
