Introductions Have Never Been My Forte, But Here We Go

 At this point, I've made two posts that serve as a quick introduction in different communities, and will probably make a few more in the upcoming days, but it's difficult to really convey who you are as a person when just listing different things that you like. 

So, who am I? 
That's a question I think I'm going to struggle with for the rest of my life, since who I am changes a little everyday. Sometimes, I'm the adult who has no clue what anything is anymore. Others, I'm a dreamer with their eyes set on a clear goal: completing and publishing my writing, so that some day, some kid out there will have something that they can see themselves in, the way that I wish I could have as a child, and continue to wish for now. There will be times when I will lock myself away from the rest of the world, withdrawing deeper into myself until I am lost to myself, and there will be times like now where I'm eager to get to know people. I am very much a person who goes through the motions, my thoughts the tides that both yearn for the world and retreat from it. 

Of course, there are some things that remain constant, and some things that are, in theory, a little less abstract than those descriptors above. 
For instance, I am Rori, and though this is not the name I was given at birth, it feels more permanent than the one I was born with. I am currently 21, use they/them and she/her pronouns, biracial (African-American and European-American), a biromantic asexual. I'm an English major currently working at a library who is looking into what to do with their future. During my freetime, I enjoy writing, reading, listening to podcasts, and cooking when I can. I've always been rather introverted, but when presented with one of my interests, it takes less time than usual for me to build a connection with someone. 
Favorite Movies: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The Princess Bride, Fiddler on the Roof, Lilo and Stitch, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Captain America: Winter Soldier
TV Shows: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, The Handmaid's Tale, The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Parks and Rec, GLOW, and Game of Thrones, among others.
Books: The Song of Achilles, Circe, Stardust, Carry On, In Other Lands, Six of Crows, Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Titan's Curse. 
Music: Sufjan Steven(my favorite song is "Should Have Known Better"), Florence + the Machine's work (I like all of their albums so far, but I think Ceremonials might be my favorite album, and my favorite song by them is a toss between "Which Witch", "Cosmic Love", and "Queen of Peace"), Panic! at the Disco, Young the Giant, Foster the People, Lana Del Ray, Marina and the Diamonds, The National, St. Vincent, Coldplay, The Neighbourhood, Hayley Kiyoko, and Fleet Foxes are probably what I listen to most, though I enjoy older artists like Queen, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Wham!, and Billy Joel, among others. Honestly, I like a lot of different kinds of music, and it kind of depends on what's going on in my life. 
Video Games: I'm honestly not much of a game person, but I enjoy Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem
Comics/Anime/Misc: For anime, I enjoy Sailor Moon, LWA, KHR, BNHA, FMA, OHSHC, Fruits Basket, probably others but I'm not that big on anime anymore. I also watch a lot of YouTube, such as Studio C, Lindsay Ellis, ContraPoints, Just Write, Drew Gooden, Jenna Moreci, MacDoesIt, and more... Like with music, my favorite YouTuber is going to vary depending on my mood; these are just the people I can usually watch and enjoy. 

Most of the time, however, I probably won't talk about the stuff I'm interested in unless I'm doing some analysis for it or it's a fandom I'm writing for and I felt like sharing a fic on here. Heck, this list will probably change a bit in just a couple of months. 

But back to the introduction, I suppose. I'm someone who tends not to see the best in a situation, but I'm trying to work against that, as there's already so much negativity in the world, and having it as my default has not enhanced my life in any way. There's a lot I don't know, but to me, one of the best things in life is getting to know more about the things you don't know about. I'm hoping not just to find a community here, but also to continue learning about others and the world, to have a true exchange of ideas and information. In other words, I want to start changing for the better.

Being determined to change for the better is always a wonderful ambition! I majored in English, too. Once upon a time, I thought I wanted to be a fiction author. However, I ultimately found that original world creation wasn't really something I cared that much for. I cared more about commenting on and engaging with other fiction, which meant I was a fic writer through and through. I don't really know if that'll ever change. I ended up becoming a teacher because of my desire to at least try to have some positive impact on the world while having one of the few jobs in existence that allows a human to have a few weeks a year to just exist as their own person.

Thank you! And I think that's good that you figured that out pretty early on. I enjoy both, though I definitely favor my own work, even if I could use some work on my worldbuilding. But there's definitely a lot to be said with the work of others. One of the things I like best about fandom is how it enables people to build off of something already existing, bringing people together who might not have otherwise connected with each other. That's actually part of the reason why mythology and folklore, in general, is so interesting to me; various versions of the same story show how different communities of people have responded to one general idea and changed it to fit their own needs. That said, I don't think I'd ever want to make a career out of being a writer, even though I do hope to publish. For me, I've always seen it as more of a passion, and I was extremely hesitant before becoming an English major because I felt like it would dampen the joy I got out of reading and writing. Thankfully, this turned out not to be the case, but I have a feeling it might if I started equating writing with the way I made a living.

I think being a teacher is one of the most commendable careers a person could choose. I actually really enjoy helping kids and had served as a tutor for a few years before I switched to working at a library last year. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I realized I would make for a poor teacher, as I felt like I wouldn't adequately be able to help others based on my own weaknesses. Teachers definitely aren't treated with the respect they deserve, which is a shame because of how influential they can be in a child's life. But I'm glad that you've been able to use your vacation time for your benefit because you're right about that.

That is definitely one of the reasons I decided not to pursue writing my own work, too. I don't want to have to thread something I sometimes like to do through the eye of a needle to make it work. What you said about mythology is also very true. I double-majored in college, and I was a Philosophy major with a concentration in Religious Studies. While I am religious my interest in it was a lot along the lines of what you said: how different cultures and peoples observe and interpret the same concepts and the same stories.

Right now, I can't do a lot with my time off because as an interim I don't make much money, but I definitely hope to visit some of my friends around when I can.
